1723–1778Katherine Read

Known as the ‘Rosalba of Britain’, Katherine Read gained fame for her talents in oils, pastels and miniatures having been instructed by Rosalba Carreira in Venice. Read exhibited her work in the 1760s at the Royal Academy. Katherine’s successful career and popularity later waned, which may have led her to seek work in India in 1777. However, her health deteriorated and she died two months into the return voyage.
