Before pursuing a career in art, Plott worked in the office of an attorney, reflecting a transition from a professional, clerical background into artistic practice. He later trained under the miniaturist Nathaniel Hone and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and with the Incorporated Society of Artists.
Plott established a practice producing portrait miniatures for private patrons, working within the established conventions of small-scale likeness. His work is characterised by careful observation and a restrained style, often focusing on clarity and character rather than elaborate display. Although less widely known than contemporaries such as John Smart or Diana Hill, Plott’s work reflects the continued importance of miniature portraiture within British society at the turn of the nineteenth century.
