1873–1971Louie Burrell
Louie Burrell (née Luker) was born in London, to a family of artists. She trained at Bushey Art School where she was awarded every year for her work. Initially based in South Africa painting rich Boer families, she met her husband and returned to London, where she supported her daughter following her husband’s sudden death. Much of her career was spent abroad, including in India, where she painted Indian Royalty and the British Viceregal court, yet her career was marred by setbacks from ill health. She returned to England and lived off an artist’s benevolent grant, painting until her death aged 98.
