Charles Hayter was a British miniature painter and drawing master. He trained in London and established a successful practice producing portrait miniatures for a growing middle- and upper-class clientele. Hayter was particularly known for his ability to depict multiple figures within a single composition, often portraying family groups with a sense of intimacy and cohesion.
Although he did not work in India himself, Hayter’s portraits were closely connected to imperial society. Many of his works were commissioned by families involved in overseas trade and service, including those linked to the East India Company. His miniatures reflect the social importance of portraiture as a means of maintaining identity and connection across distance, particularly for families separated by colonial travel and employment.
